Mood Disorders

I used to think that I was weak for feeling anxious and depressed. But now I realize that it takes a lot of strength to feel everything so deeply. It's not a weakness to be sensitive. It's actually a superpower. We just need to learn how to harness it and use it to create positive change in the world. - Zendaya, Source: Interview with InStyle Magazine, September 2021

When we talk about mood disorders, we're referring to conditions that significantly affect your emotional state, causing persistent feelings of sadness, extreme mood swings, or periods of unusually high energy or irritability. These can include depression, bipolar disorder, cyclothymia, and other related conditions that impact your daily functioning and quality of life. Understanding the Rhythm of Bipolar Disorder

While mood disorders generally involve persistent feelings, Bipolar Disorder and Cyclothymia often feel like a shift in your internal rhythm. It is not just about being "happy" or "sad." It is about how your energy, sleep, and thoughts move through the world.

The Highs (Mania or Hypomania): This might feel like a sudden rush of ideas, a need to stay busy, or feeling like you can do anything. For many, it can also feel like intense irritability or "racing" thoughts that are hard to quiet down.

The Lows (Depression): This often looks like a heavy fog. It can feel like losing interest in the things you usually love, feeling physically slowed down, or a sense of hopelessness that makes the future feel blurry.

A Collaborative Path to the Middle Space: Managing these cycles usually requires a team. While medication can provide the foundation for stability, therapy is where we work together to build the life that happens on top of that foundation. We work alongside your medical providers to ensure your family has a comprehensive circle of care.

A Note for Parents and Caregivers Watching your teen or young adult navigate these shifts can feel confusing. You might feel like you are walking on eggshells. Our goal is to give you and your child the language to talk about these shifts without blame, so you can move from a place of "fixing" to a place of steady support.
